transistor
n 1: a semiconductor device capable of amplification [synonym:
{transistor}, {junction transistor}, {electronic
transistor}]

Transistor \Trans*ist"or\, n. [transfer resistor, from its
ability to tranfer a current across a resistor.]
(Electronics)
a component used in electronic devices consisting of three
regions of at least two types of a semiconducting material,
such as doped silicon, connected to each other and to three
electrodes in a conducting path so as to modify the current
or voltage in an electronic circuit.

Note: Transistors are used in almost all modern electronic
devices, having replaced the vacuum tube in most
applications. Since they are based on the electronic
characteristics of solids, they are called solid-state
devices. Typically a transistor is composed of p, n,
and p-type semiconductors in series, or of n, p, and n,
with the center region being a thin layer between the
two outer regions. An electronic signal input to the
central layer may be substantially amplified by such a
device. In integrated circuits, many thousands of
transistors may be etched into a single small wafer of
silicon.

  • Transistor - Wikipedia
A transistor is a semiconductor device used to amplify or switch electrical signals and power It is one of the basic building blocks of modern electronics [1] It is composed of semiconductor material, usually with at least three terminals for connection to an electronic circuit
  • What Is a Transistor? (Definition, How It Works, Example . . .
A transistor is a device that controls an electrical current by acting as an amplifier or a switch As an amplifier, a transistor can increase the electrical output, even if the input is small As a switch, a transistor can alternate between ‘on’ and ‘off’ phases to manage the electrical current
  • Transistor - GeeksforGeeks
Diffusion Transistor: It uses diffused semiconductor junction for amplification Construction of Transistor A transistor is an three layer semiconductor device which is sandwiched between two same types of semiconductor The process of sandwiching is called fabrication of transistor
  • What is a transistor and how does it work? - TechTarget
A transistor is a miniature semiconductor that regulates or controls current or voltage flow in addition to amplifying and generating these electrical signals and acting as a switch or gate for them Typically, transistors consist of three layers, or terminals, of a semiconductor material, each of which can carry a current
  • How do transistors work? - Explain that Stuff
A transistor is a miniature electronic component that can do two different jobs It can work either as an amplifier or a switch: When it works as an amplifier , it takes in a tiny electric current at one end (an input current) and produces a much bigger electric current (an output current) at the other
  • Transistor | Definition Uses | Britannica
transistor, semiconductor device for amplifying, controlling, and generating electrical signals Transistors are the active components of integrated circuits , or “microchips,” which often contain billions of these minuscule devices etched into their shiny surfaces
  • Transistors: What Are They and How Do They Work? - ThoughtCo
To understand how a transistor works, you have to understand how semiconductors react to an electric potential Some semiconductors will be n -type, or negative, which means that free electrons in the material drift from a negative electrode (of, say, a battery it's connected to) toward the positive
