praetor    音标拼音: [pr'itɚ]
n. 执政官,长官

执政官,长官

praetor
n 1: an annually elected magistrate of the ancient Roman
Republic [synonym: {praetor}, {pretor}]

Praetor \Pr[ae]"tor\, n.
See {Pretor}.
[1913 Webster]

PRAETOR, Roman civil law. A municipal officer of Rome, so called because,
(praeiret populo,) he went before or took precedence of the people. The
consuls were at first called praetors. Liv. Hist. III. 55. He was a sort of
minister of justice, invested with certain legislative powers, especially in
regard to the forms or formalities of legal proceedings. Ordinarily, be aid
not decide causes as a judge, but prepared the grounds of decision for the
judge and sent to, him the questions to be decided between the parties. The
judge was always chosen by the parties, either directly, or by rejecting,
under certain rules and limitations, the persons proposes to them by the
praetor. Hence the saying of Cicero, (pro Cluentis, 43,) that no one could
be judged except by a judge of his own choice. There were several kinds of
officers called proctors. See Vicat, Vocab.
2. Before entering on his functions he published an edict announcing
the system adopted by him for the application and interpretation of the laws
during his magistracy. His authority extended over all jurisdictions, and
was summarily expressed by the word do, dico, addico, i, e. do I give the
action, dico I declare the law, I promulgate the edict, addico I invest the
judge with the right of judging. There were certain cases which he was bound
to decide himself, assisted by a council chosen by himself perhaps the
Decemvirs. But the greater part of causes brought before him, be sent either
to a judge, an arbitrator, or to recuperators, (recuperatores,) or to the
centumvirs, as before stated. Under the empire the powers of the praetor
passed by degrees to the praefect of the praetorium, or the praefect of the
city; so that this magistrate, who at first ranked with the consuls, at last
dwindled into a director or manager of the public spectacles or games.
3. Till lately, there were officers in certain cities of Germany
denominated praetors Vide 1 Kent, Com. 528.

  • Scattering of light - BYJUS
Why Is the Colour of the Clear Sky Blue? And Why Are the Clouds White? Molecules with a larger size than the wavelength of light experience the scattering effect differently; the phenomenon is known as the Mie effect Due to the largeness of particles, the light appears white That is why the clouds, which are made of water droplets, are white
  • Why does the sky appear blue? - Toppr
When a white light (from sun) enters the earth's atmosphere, it gets scattered away due to the atmospheric particles Since, blue colour has the minimum wavelength, so blue colour scatters the most and thus the sky appears blue
  • Why does the sky appear blue on a day? - Toppr
The sky appears blue on a clear day because of the scattering of blue component of white sunlight by air molecules presents in the atmosphere When sunlight passes through the atmosphere, most of the longer wavelength lights do not get scattered much and hence pass straight through the atmosphere The shorter wavelength blue light is, however, scattered all around the sky and whichever
  • Why do the sky appears dark instead of blue to the astronauts? - BYJUS
There is no atmosphere in the outer space We see the sky blue because scattering happens due to the particles in the atmosphere The reason for scattering of light is the colloidal particles in the atmosphere which refract the light in different directions When the blue light is refracted, this light comes to our eyes and thus the sky appears
  • Explain giving reason why the sky appears blue to an observer . . . - Toppr
Explain giving reason why the sky appears blue to an observer from the surface of the Earth What should the appearance of the sky be during the day for an astronaut staying in the international space station orbiting the Earth? State reason to justify your answer
  • Why is the colour of sky blue? - Toppr
The molecules of air and other fine particles in the atmosphere have size smaller than the wavelength of visible light These are more effective in scattering light of shorter wavelength at the blue end than light of longer wavelengths at the red end When sunlight passes through the atmosphere, the fine particles in air scatter the blue colour more strongly than red The scattered blue light
  • Why is the colour of the clear sky blue? - Toppr
Sky as such does not have any colour as such, but looks blue due to the maximum scattering of blue colour Air and water molecules in the sky scatter blue light more since the colour has more energy than colours like red and orange Light of shorter wavelength is scattered much more than light of longer wavelength
  • Why does the sky appears blue during day time, red during . . . - Toppr
Sky appears blue during day time because the light of sun gets scattered and the most scattered light is blue, so the sky appears blue During the evening and early morning when the sun is not overhead but it is below the horizon, the only light that reaches our eye is red and hence the sky appears to be reddish in colour For an astronaut, the sky appears to be black because there is no
  • Why does sky appears blue - BYJUS
Why does sky appears blue ?The correct option is D Fine particles in the air scatter blue light more than red light The molecules of air and other fine particles in the atmosphere have size smaller than the wavelength of visible light These are more effective in scattering lights of shorter wavelengths at the blue end than light of longer wavelengths at the red end The red light has a
  • Why does the sky appear blue - Toppr
A clear cloudless day-time sky is blue because molecules in the air scatter blue light from the sun more than they scatter red light When we look towards the sun at sunset, we see red and orange colours because the blue light has been scattered out and away from the line of sight
